Honestly? Given the way the strings attach, I think they're more likely stapled on. Given the pattern of the lacing, if you were to untie it, there would just be a bunch of holes, but the black parts at the lace's corners look more like open brackets than holes into the body. And, the string itself doesn't actually go down under, it just folds. The staples are probably just to hold it in place, assuming it's not a tattoo.
